Verizon FiOS is so slow..
Update: For the DNS servers, use these
Primary: 4.2.2.1
Secondary: 4.2.2.2
Verizon FiOS is so slow.. actually, thats a lie, its not slow. It only seems that way, and I will tell you why.
Truth is, Verizon FiOS is fast, but why when you type in a website address, does it take forever to come up? Does my computer suck? Maybe. Is the bad weather causing problems with my connection? Not unless a tree fell and snapped a cable somewhere.. So whats the problem??
I have one word… DNS.. If you don’t know what it is, Google it up, because I don’t have time to go into it. Go to Wikipedia.com and knock yourself out. The quick version is, when you type in a website address, your computer goes to Verizon to get the location of that website, the IP address actually. Your computer could give a rats a$$ about the name of a website, it only cares about the IP. The name is only for us humans. If you go into your address bar and type in Http://Break.com and want to be magically whisked away to an awesome site with videos and chicks, you had better hope that Verizon’s ‘ DNS SERVER ‘ has the IP for it, otherwise, it has to keep looking. As long as it is looking for it, your computer is waiting. If Verizon servers cant find it, you are SOL.
All that being said, why doesn’t Verizon just hand over the IP address to my computer when my computer asks for it? I wish I knew, but I don’t. Can it be fixed? Yes it can. This is a country of freedom, and Verizon agrees. You have the option of choosing your DNS server. You can choose a lightning speed Internet service (haha, i made a pun) and a lightning quick DNS service that has nothing to do with Verizon. Add the two together, and you have a bad-ass setup for surfing the net..
Now, what you have all been waiting for… HOW ITS DONE!!!!
- Open your browser and go to Http://192.168.1.1 (if you don’t get a page here, you either don’t have a Verizon router, or you monkeyed with your settings)
- log in (DUH!)
- go to the following location… System Monitoring > Advanced Status > Yes > Full Status/System wide Monitoring of Connections > Network (Home/Office) > Settings
- Make your DNS settings EXACTLY as shown in the following screen capture. (if you do not have the option to enter the DNS IP addresses, simply change the dns server option to another setting, then back to ‘ Use the following DNS blah blah blah..’ )
Once all is said and done, you should be doing much better… Comment on this, I would like to hear success and failure stories.
